Individual Development Plan
Individual Development Plan (IDP) meetings provide a structure for career-guidance conversations between scholars and their mentors through goal setting, skills assessment, and evaluation.
The goal of the MN-LHS program is for each scholar to have three IDP meetings per year, about 4 months apart. IDP meetings will include the scholar and REC Co-Directors. Mentor(s) are also invited to join IDP meetings at the discretion of the scholar. It is requested that mentor(s) will attend the initial IDP meeting to discuss project timelines, areas of development, and other training needs.
Components of the IDP meetings include short-term and long-term goals in research, education/training, academic skills, and career development. Scholars will determine priorities for knowledge, skills, or mastery within each competency or standard area, and develop their plans appropriately.
One element of IDP meetings is to assess the scholar’s level of competence for LHS competencies. Each scholar will be expected to develop an individualized LHS competency plan, with mastery in those competencies more closely aligned with their research area. This competency-based approach helps to ensure that scholars get the tools they need for success. It also allows for the individualization necessary to generate scholars with a diverse set of research skills and interests.
IDP forms will be sent to scholars approximately one month prior to each meeting. These forms should be completed prior to the scheduled meeting time.
