Design Shop

Peer support is a critical component to fostering deep learning and enabling career success. Scholars are required to participate in bi-monthly Design Shop sessions over the entirety of the program. Design Shop is a seminar-style course. The format will vary and can include the following:
 

  • An invited lecture by faculty, research presentation by embedded experts, presentation by community partners and clinical leaders on health system needs and examples of strong and weak solutions.

  • A research presentation by a second- or third-year scholar on planned publications, grants, or clinical dissemination and implementation for their research project. These are interactive sessions with the presenting scholar and her or his mentors discussing the research project and future plans with the audience. Program leadership may invite additional experts as appropriate.

  • A roundtable problem-solving discussion on challenges in research and career development through peer-to-peer consultancy.

  • An interactive discussion relating to the development of leadership skills, such as managing study coordinators, convincing clinical partners to adopt new techniques, completion and discussion of a leadership inventory tool, or a presentation on emotional intelligence, team management, or work-life balance.

  • An interactive presentation on various topics relevant to the transition to independence, including managing your budget, seeking external funding through SciVal, grant writing resources such as the Research and Academic Support Services, navigating the IRB, literature searching using Scopus, and using tools such as Pure Experts and RedCap.

  • Role-playing exercises where scholars rehearse or practice interpersonal interactions with health care delivery organization personnel or patients by simulating or enacting real life situations in the clinical context. Scholars, mentors, and program leadership will evaluate performance and offer constructive feedback. These sessions are designed to facilitate embeddedness within organizations.

In addition to scholar community building and discussions at the Design Shop, seminars will guide scholars in how to implement the LHS competencies within their own work to achieve greater depth. Scholars will provide anonymous evaluation of the Design Shop after each session.
