Budget & Funding
Salary Coverage
The program requires the appointed scholar to devote 25-50% percent of annual full-time effort to the grant. $63,000 is provided annually for salary + fringe support. Scholars are not allowed to reduce their level of effort over the course of the award without prior approval. Institutional supplementation of salary must not require extra duties or responsibilities that would interfere with the purpose of the P30 award. In no case may grant funds be used for salary supplementation. The remaining effort can be divided among other research, clinical, and teaching activities but only if these activities are consistent with the goals of the P30. Scholars may devote effort, with compensation, on Federal or non-Federal sources as long as specific aims of other supporting grant(s) differ from those of the P30.
Allowable Scholar Expenses
Scholars will have access to $12,500 for research development support such as: travel to scientific meetings; consultant costs; research supplies; reimbursement of patient participation costs; equipment; tuition, fees, and books related to didactic courses or career development; and other research support services including personnel and computer time. Travel is allowed to scientific meetings, for primary data collection (site visits, focus groups, etc), and mandatory MN-LHS meetings. It does not cover travel to the U of M for courses. Foreign travel is allowable, but must be approved prior to booking any flights, etc.
Tuition and fees are paid for non-UMN scholars for the required PubH 6864 course. Scholars employed by the University of Minnesota are required to utilize the Regent’s Scholarship (75% coverage) to defray tuition and fees costs and must cover the remaining 25% of tuition costs independently per UMN policy.
Expenses must be allowable, reasonable, allocable, and necessary. Costs cannot be pooled or used for advertising, recruitment, or other programs unrelated or indirectly related to the research activities of individual candidates or appointees. These expenses must not duplicate items generally available at the applicant institution.
These expenses need to be pre-approved and monitored by the scholar’s home institution. The monthly invoice will need to summarize the expenses into the category “Scholar Expenses”, but provide detailed subcategories on a supplemental sheet.
Effort
The program requires the appointed scholar to devote 25-50% of annual full-time effort to the grant.
All scholars are required to certify their effort via their home institution’s effort certification policies and systems.
